PC HEALTHCHECKS

WHAT DOES A  PC  HEALTH-CHECK  INCLUDE?

We currently offer two levels of PC health-check these being ‘basic’ and ‘health-check plus’. Below is a description of each of these along with the basic price.

Note that as computer systems come in all sorts of specifications the following notes are not applicable to all systems. However they do outline the types of operations carried out during the two types of health-check that we have available.

Option 1 - Basic PC Health-check.

Includes: (If applicable to your system)

  • Check on boot time
  • Check on start up tray
  • Clean optical and FDD drives where possible
  • Check operation of drives
  • Check main system configuration settings (print report where possible)
  • Check monitor settings
  • Check for Anti-Virus
  • Check for Firewall
  • In some instances we may run other system checks and/or utilities. This depends on the system set-up.
  • Advise on start programs, firewall, anti-virus, etc.
  • Check mains lead polarity (if appropriate) and insulation plus continuity of the earth conductor if applicable
  • Check insulation of system and earth continuity if applicable

This basic health-check includes the basic items that help ensure that your PC is performing at its optimum for your needs. There are other procedures that may be desirable but can take many hours to perform particularly regarding hard disk maintenance (ie de-fragmenting, full virus checks, registry cleaning, spyware checks, etc). It is not possible to include such operations in a health-check as the cost would need to cover so much time. We therefore normally simply report observations regarding such things to the customer as many computer users are happy to carry out such operations themselves. If however you wish for us to carry out such operations we are always happy to try to assist where possible although an additional (reasonable) charge would need to be made, please ask for an estimate of the cost.

The basic health-check is carried out without removing any covers from the system base unit.

The cost of the basic health-check is currently £42.00 and generally takes around an hour and a half to complete.

Option 2 - Health-check Plus.

Includes: (Note: Not available for laptop or notebook systems)

  • All of the above items in Option 1
  • Cleaning inside the system unit including fans and filters
  • Check internal lead dressing
  • Check internal plug/socket connections
  • Check seating of all PCB’s and memory modules to the motherboard
  • Check for visual signs of overheating components, etc

Everything that was said about the basic health-check holds true for the health-check plus. The purpose of the additional items that are checked during the health-check plus are basically to help prevent problems due to overheating and/or connections working loose.

Fans (particularly internal CPU cooling fans, etc) can easily become ‘furred up’ with dust, pet hair, etc and this prevents them from cooling as they should. Modern CPU’s can run at temperatures of up to almost 100 Degrees C. in normal use, if the cooling system stops working this can easily lead to overheating and component failure.

One of the most common reasons for PC’s to ‘play up’ particularly when the problem is intermittent is loose connections between various plugs/sockets and PCB cards and the motherboard. This health-check therefore includes checking that all of the plugs and PCB’s/Memory modules, etc are firmly seated into their respective sockets.

The cost of the health-check plus is currently £58.00 and generally takes about two hours to complete.

Note that our health-check service does not cover the cost of any faults with the system whether intermittent or immediately evident to our engineer.
